03 · Digital Skills

Digital confidence opens more than a screen.

Beacon helps children and young people build practical, safe and relevant digital skills for learning, work, creativity and participation in modern life.

Beaconoftenderlove

Who

Children and youth with limited access to devices, guided practice or digital learning opportunities.

Focus

Foundational skills, online safety and practical application.

Approach

Small-group learning, hands-on projects and responsible mentorship.

Why this work matters

Access matters. Knowing what to do with it matters more.

A device or internet connection does not automatically become opportunity. Learners need time to practise, patient guidance and the confidence to solve problems without feeling left behind.

Beacon’s digital-skills work begins with everyday foundations and builds toward purposeful use. Safety, judgement and responsible online participation are treated as essential skills—not optional extras.

Our principle

Work with people, not around them.

Programs begin with community priorities and are shaped through responsible relationships.

Program framework

Three connected areas of focus.

Each area can stand on its own, but the strongest support connects immediate needs with longer-term opportunity.

01

Digital foundations

Build comfort with the tools and habits used in learning and everyday tasks.

  • Device, keyboard and file basics
  • Documents, research and communication tools
  • Problem-solving through guided practice

02

Safe participation

Help learners make informed choices about privacy, information and behaviour online.

  • Privacy and account safety
  • Responsible communication
  • Recognising unreliable or harmful content

03

Practical pathways

Connect skills to creativity, education, work and enterprise.

  • Project-based digital learning
  • Productivity and collaboration tools
  • Exposure to further training and careers

How the work moves

From listening to a meaningful next step.

Beacon’s role is to make support understandable, practical and connected to the people it is meant to serve.

01

Start where learners are

Assess confidence and access without assuming prior experience.

02

Practise together

Use guided, hands-on activities that make digital tools less intimidating.

03

Build something useful

Apply skills through a task, project or real learning need.

04

Open the next pathway

Connect confident learners to further training, mentorship or opportunity.

What progress can look like

Change people can recognise in daily life.

These outcomes describe the direction of the program. Specific measures can be connected to each funded activity and reported with appropriate context.
